How the wallpaper roll calculation works
Wallpaper is installed as vertical strips, often called drops. A strip-based calculation is more useful than dividing wall area by roll area because the strip must span the wall height and a repeating design must align with the adjacent strip. The calculator first finds the total wall width: for a rectangular room it uses 2 × (length + width); for one feature wall it uses the width entered.
Total wall width is divided by the physical roll width and rounded up to get the number of full drops. The wall height and trimming allowance form the raw drop length. For pattern-match wallpaper, that length is rounded up to the next complete vertical repeat. The roll length divided by this adjusted drop, rounded down, tells you how many usable drops the roll can supply. Required drops divided by drops per roll, rounded up, produces the minimum roll estimate.
Why pattern repeat changes the answer
A design can be free match, straight match, offset match or another product-specific layout. Free-match wallpaper does not require neighboring strips to align at a repeating motif, so only wall height and trimming allowance determine each cut. With a repeating design, part of the roll may be lost while moving the next cut to the correct motif position. A large repeat can therefore reduce the number of complete drops obtained from a roll.
This tool uses a transparent conservative method for ordinary pattern matching: it rounds every cut length up to a whole vertical repeat. It does not attempt to infer an offset or half-drop layout from an image or product name. If the label states half drop, offset match, reverse hang or supplies a manufacturer-specific calculator, confirm the quantity with that guidance or a professional installer before ordering.
Measure the package you will actually buy
Roll widths and lengths vary. Some products are sold as single rolls, double rolls, panels or custom-length murals, and retailer naming is not globally consistent. Enter the width and length of the physical package represented by the listed price. If a listing describes a double roll but gives one combined length, enter that combined length and its package price once.
Do not rely on the defaults when shopping. The initial metric values—52 cm wide and 10.05 m long—reflect a common format described by Dunelm, not a universal standard. Copy the exact width, usable length and vertical repeat from the manufacturer's label or retailer specification. In imperial mode, room measurements use feet while roll width, repeat and trimming allowance use inches.
Windows, doors and irregular walls
This calculator deliberately does not subtract windows or doors. A wall opening does not necessarily remove a full-width, full-height strip from the cutting plan. Pieces above or below an opening may be too short, oriented incorrectly or unable to continue the pattern elsewhere. Keeping openings in the strip count creates a safer planning estimate and is consistent with the caution used by wallcovering manufacturers for complex layouts.
For a large opening that clearly removes one or more complete drops, sketch the wall and plan each strip before reducing the count. Bay windows, sloped ceilings, stairways, arches, columns, alcoves and walls of different heights should be measured wall by wall. Run separate calculations for sections with different heights or products, then confirm the combined order with the installer.
Trim allowance, spare rolls and dye lots
The trimming allowance is the total extra material added to every drop for cutting at the ceiling and skirting or baseboard. Wallpaper Shop states that its estimator adds 10 cm to each drop; this tool uses 10 cm only as an editable starting value. Crooked ceilings, uneven floors or inexperienced installation may need more. A smaller allowance may be appropriate only when measurements and cutting are controlled precisely.
The optional reserve checkbox adds one unopened roll after calculating the minimum. A reserve can help with installation errors or later repairs, especially when a discontinued design or different production batch could be hard to match. It also increases cost and may be unnecessary when the retailer accepts unopened returns. Check the return policy, batch or lot number and stock availability before deciding.

Frequently asked questions
How many drops will I get from one wallpaper roll?
Divide the usable roll length by the adjusted drop length and round down. A 10.05 m roll with a 2.65 m adjusted drop yields three complete drops, not 3.79, because a partial fourth strip cannot span the wall.
Should I round wallpaper rolls up?
Yes. A fraction of a retail roll generally cannot be purchased, so the minimum quantity is rounded up. The calculator separately shows an optional full reserve roll rather than hiding extra material inside the formula.
Can I calculate peel-and-stick wallpaper?
Yes if it is supplied as uniform rolls and installed in vertical full-height strips. Enter the actual width, length and repeat. For pre-cut panels, murals or custom-sized sheets, follow the product's panel layout instead.
Does price affect the number of rolls?
No. Price is used only after the material quantity is calculated. A sale, coupon or currency change cannot reduce the physical number of drops required.
