How to interpret BMI

For adults age 20 and older, the CDC categories are: underweight below 18.5, healthy weight from 18.5 to below 25, overweight from 25 to below 30, and obesity at 30 or higher. Obesity is divided into classes 1, 2 and 3.

BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not directly measure body fat and should be considered with other health factors. Children and teens require age- and sex-specific percentiles. If you have health questions, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
